Arthritis and Osteoporosis – All what you need to know!

Generally, we confuse osteoporosis and some types of arthritis. Arthritis and osteoporosis are two common but different conditions. Osteoporosis is the loss of bone density - which means your bones become brittle and prone to fractures. While arthritis refers to pain/swelling in the one or more joints and limits movement of the affected area. Arthritis and osteoporosis can show their ugly faces as you grow old. Both of these conditions can cause you not to be able to get around like you need to. But never give into these painful infirmities. You can definitely manage these conditions and lead an active life.

Even though some forms of arthritis can directly or indirectly lead to osteoporosis, the symptoms of the conditions are quite different. While pain and swelling are the two most common symptoms of arthritis, Osteoporosis manifests no symptoms at all and you will not even know of this condition until you sustain a fracture, due to a minor fall or accident.

Do you have an achy feeling in the morning or during damp, rainy weather? Do you find it difficult to button up, turn keys or open jars? Probably it could be a sign that you have arthritis. Ouch! Arthritis really hurts. You feel stiff and sore!  Generally, when it pains, we avoid doing things that aggravate it. Likewise, when you have arthritis you may feel that exercises are out of reach. But walking is one form of exercise that is an accessible, low-impact activity that can help relieve arthritis symptoms.

You can prevent arthritis by having a diet that is rich in calcium, protein, vitamin D and C and engaging in some mild to moderate physical activity.

Have you sustained a fracture after a seemingly minor incident?  Do you have a stooped posture? If yes, it could be a sign that your bones have been weakened by osteoporosis. Generally, spine, hips, ribs, and wrists are the major portions of the body that are affected by this disease. If you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis besides taking medications an exercise regime can help build and boost your bone strength, enhance your posture, increase your muscle strength and improve your balance.

Exercise is a top way to build strong bones, and it’s never too late – or too early – to start osteoporosis prevention. A diet rich in calcium, and a simple exercise like brisk walking along with adequate sun exposure can help prevent Osteoporosis.
