Bridge the Gap

One among the list of commonly done dental procedures is a Dental Bridge. As the term suggests, a dental bridge is a prosthetic addition that bridges the gap made by one or more missing teeth, and they are supported by natural teeth or implants.

Traditional bridges are the ones used most often for the seekers of better dental health. A traditional dental bridge is typically made of 2 or more crowns for the ‘abutment’ teeth that are on both sides of the gap which function as anchors for the bridge. The false tooth or teeth to fill the gap is made from alloys, porcelain and acrylic; or a mix of these materials. The crowns and bridges used are cemented onto existing teeth and can therefore only be removed by a dentist.

Dental bridges:
  • Protect a weak tooth from getting broken or fractured
  • Give you back the ability to chew food and speak properly
  • Bring back your smile
  • Keep surrounding teeth from moving out of position
  • Even the force in your bite by replacing the missing teeth
  • Help maintain the shape of your face

When your dentist has informed you about needing a dental bridge, he will first prepare the teeth on the sides by possibly reshaping or re contouring them. This creates enough space for a crown to be placed over them. After this moulds impressions of the teeth are made, to help the dentist model the bridge and crowns accordingly. The dentist usually makes a temporary bridge or you to safeguard the uncovered teeth and gums, while the permanent bridge is being made.

The temporary bridge will be removed at your next visit and the new permanent bridge; in the material chosen by the dentist, will be fitted and adjusted, so that you are comfortable. Over the next few weeks, you will be asked to gauge the fit of the dental bridge based on your bite. Be sure to make it to all your appointments without fail, till the bridge is well settled in its space. Once this is done, the bridge will be cemented firmly into the place.
