Chipped, cracked or gapped teeth - Perfect your imperfections!

Isn't it a bit awkward to smile if you have gaps between your teeth? Yes, gaps can be quite embarrassing, especially when it appears between the two upper front teeth. What's more, the gap between a person's teeth can increase over time. A gap can even appear from out of nowhere when a person's bite changes with age. In such a case, a person who has had a perfect smile for years will one fine day notice that she/he suddenly has a ‘gappy smile’!

Let us analyze some of the reasons that contribute to gaps between teeth. In most cases, genes play a crucial role in the positioning of the teeth in the mouth. If your parents have gaps in teeth, chances are there that you might also end up having similar teeth. Similarly, childhood oral behaviors like sucking your thumb or breathing with your mouth can also lead to gaps in the teeth. People with the habit of biting the pen or pencil may also experience a gradual shift in the teeth, leading to spaces. Depending upon the reason teeth gaps can be corrected with dental crowns, dental bonding, orthodontics or dental veneers.

Ouch! You feel a sudden sharp pain when you bite down. It quickly disappears and perhaps you ignore it. You avoid certain foods or chew on one side of your mouth. Does this sound similar? Is so, you may have a chipped or cracked tooth. You may chip or crack your tooth while biting down on a hard candy, removing clothing tags, falling over, chewing pens or pencils and playing sports without mouth guards on. Other reasons may include teeth grinding, untreated cavities or old, oversized amalgam fillings.

Have you chipped a tooth while snapping off a bottle cap with your teeth? If it is a minor chip it may be tempting to ignore, but fixing it quickly can save a lot of time and trouble down the lane. If the chip is relatively small, it’s often possible to fix it with dental bonding. For larger chips or cracks, veneers or crowns may be suggested.
