Diabetic stomach pain: Why and how to deal with it?

Diabetes is a difficult disease to manage. To control the illness, you must adjust your lifestyle in addition to taking the necessary medications.

Diabetics may also notice changes in their gut, such as how their digestive tract feels, sounds, and behaves. It can also cause stomach pain in certain people. Here's why diabetes might cause stomach pains and how to deal with them.

Stomach pain in diabetes

When a person is diagnosed with diabetes, the first change they make is to change their eating habits. More fiber-rich foods, such as fruits, beans, and vegetables, are frequently recommended. The fiber in these foods keeps you full without adding extra calories, and it also helps to lower elevated cholesterol levels.

However, too much fiber can create gas and bloating, which can lead to stomach pain. As a result, abruptly increasing your fiber intake is not recommended. The easiest method to avoid stomach discomfort, gas, and bloating is to gradually increase your intake.

If you're soaking legumes or lentils, discard the water they've been sitting in. This may also aid in the reduction of gas and bloating.

There are a few more explanations for this.

1. Glucose lowering medications

Several medications used to treat type 2 diabetes and lower blood glucose levels can also upset your stomach. Experts recommend starting with a modest dose and gradually increasing it as directed by your doctor.

2. Metformin

Metformin is a common first-line treatment for type 2 diabetes. In extreme cases, it might cause heartburn, nausea, or diarrhea. Approximately 5% to 10% of persons are unable to tolerate the medication and experience diarrhea and gastrointestinal discomfort.

The drug is usually begun at a low dose and gradually increased over many weeks as needed.

3. Injectables

GLP-1 agonists are a recent family of injectable medicines. Nausea and vomiting are also possible side effects of Byetta and Victoza. It is dose-related, according to prescribers. As a result, it's recommended that you start low and work your way up.

GLP-1 agonists create a sense of fullness by slowing stomach emptying. People aren't used to the sensation and may be uncomfortable as a result.
