Students enjoy a positive classroom. Here are some tips that can help teachers maintain the positive energy that is so helpful for creating an ideal learning climate.
Greet your students with a smile. Make it a part of your daily routine. Call them by names. It shows them that you value them. Getting the class started with a positive message allows a positive vibe resonate with students. Make each student feel important and set a positive tone to the class.
Create classroom rules together. It is the responsibility of teachers to set clear and consistent rules about appropriate behaviour and reasonable consequences for breaking them. Classroom rooms should apply to all equally. Make sure to praise and reward positive behaviours. This motivates students to be on their best behaviour.
Model good behaviour. Teachers are powerful behavioural role models to students. If you show your students how important it is to be kind by taking every opportunity to be kind yourself, they will follow. Yes, teachers are mirrors for their students. So, be fair, considerate and respectful to others.
Never ever, yell at students. Do not belittle, yell or threaten students. It doesn’t change student behaviour, but it can actually make it worse. So, never lose your cool. If they misbehave try talking calmly and allow them time to reflect upon their mistakes.
Create a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Be available, helpful and approachable to all students, not just the ones who are easy to deal with. Be less intimidating and easy to talk to. Be friendly, but not familiar. This helps in fostering a safe learning environment for students.
Do not compare one student with another. Every student is unique. Instead of comparing you can say by citing examples so that students take challenges of being better. Comparison hurts and makes the student lose self-confidence.
Do not use shame as a disciplinary tool. Follow the principle - praise loudly, correct softly. Do not shame the students who are misbehaving in front of the whole class. When addressing individual misbehaviours make it a point to speak to students personally. This shows respect and also protects the student from public embarrassment and humiliation.
Get to know your students. When you know your students well you will understand them better. So reach out! Make personal connections with your students. Have conversations with them regularly. Not just about academics but also about what interests them. Students will connect, respect, and feel more comfortable with a teacher who they feel cares about them.
Don’t be a boring teacher. Use a variety of teaching methods like group discussions, creating classroom games, using smart boards, participating in projects, field trip activities etc. Engaging students is the best way to get them to the learning spirit and mode.
Students are more likely to learn in a safe and positive learning environment – one in which they feel valued and protected. As a teacher make sure to build and cultivate this environment. Remember, every student deserves a classroom that feels like a home away from home!
