Accept CookiesDo you feel your school-going child brings in infections frequently? If so, keep reading. Well, school is a place where your kids get to learn a lot of things. But unfortunately it is the hot zone for germs too. Your child is exposed to germs in many ways - while playing games, sharing food and art supplies with friends, touching door knobs, water faucets, computer keyboards etc. As your child’s immune system is still developing they can pick up an infection easily resulting in bouts of cold, cough or a stomach upset. We cannot prevent germ exposure but we can help reduce the risk of the child picking up an infection through proper hygiene habits.
Good personal hygiene is the key to good health. So, helping children understand the basics of good hygiene at a young age will go a long way in helping them stay healthy for life. The following are some of the tips to protect kids at school from picking up germs and falling sick.
1. Don’t ever underestimate the power of hand washing. Hygiene starts with the hands. Training your child to wash hands with water and soap, preferably those with antibacterial properties is the best way to deal with germs and infections. They should be taught to wash hands after using the toilet, before having lunch or snacks, after coughing, sneezing or blowing their nose or whenever their hands are dirty.
2. Placing fruit or floral scented hand-sanitizer dispensers in the classroom can encourage kids to rub a dab of hand-sanitizer to get rid of the germs that have been transferred to their hands.
3. Teach your child not to borrow art supplies like pen, pencils and crayons. They should carry their own art supplies if possible. With so many kids sharing art supplies the classroom can be literally teeming with germs.
4. Teach your child the coughing and sneezing etiquette. They should cover their mouth while sneezing or coughing preferably with a tissue and dispose it off properly. If tissue isn’t available make sure your kids use their sleeves and not their hands.
5. Teach your kids to avoid germy habits like sticking their fingers or objects into their mouth, ears or nose.
6. Nail care is an integral part of hygiene. Teachers should ensure that the child’s nails are clipped regularly as germs could accumulate under long nails.
7. Children should not attend school if they suffer from vomiting, loose stools, fever, sore throat, ear infections or a runny nose. They should get back to school only when the symptoms subside and they feel better. This prevents the chances of illness from spreading.
8. It is important to teach your child proper foot hygiene. Kids spend a lot of time on their feet. To avoid sweaty feet problem make sure they wear 100% natural breathable socks n shoes, as sweaty feet can harbor tons of bacteria and cause itchy, stinky infections.
It is the responsibility of parents and teachers to instill healthy habits and teach kids the importance of good personal hygiene since young age. Practicing good hygiene not only helps to keep germs at bay but also ward off illnesses. Remember, where there is hygiene there is health and where there is health there is happiness! Yes, hygiene, health and happiness are crucial in molding these little ones. No wonder, healthy and happy kids have better grades, fewer sick leaves and behave better in class!
