Home Remedies to Reduce Menstrual Cramps

 


What causes menstrual cramps? 

When you're menstruating, you're likely to experience pain in your abdomen, lower back, and thighs. The muscles of your womb contract and relax during your period to assist remove the built-up lining.   • nausea

  • headaches 
  • diarrhea

1. Taking OTC (over-the-counter) drugs:

For menstruation discomfort and excessive menstrual flow, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) are the most used over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers. Ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen are examples of NSAIDs (Aleve).

These medications work by reducing the amount of prostaglandin produced by your body. NSAIDs are not as effective at lowering prostaglandin as oral contraceptives, but they can help with pain relief.


2. The use of heat: 

Heat can help reduce pain in the abdomen and lower back. Heat therapy (typically a heat patch or pack) was shown to be as effective as NSAIDS in relieving menstruation pain in a 2018 evaluation of studiesTrusted Source. It may also result in fewer adverse effects. More research, however, is needed, according to the authors. 

Take a warm bath or use a hot towel if you don't have a hot-water bottle or heating pad. You can also create your heating pad by following these instructions: 

  • Sew two pieces of cloth together, leaving a hole at the top. 
  • Sew up the hole and fill it with uncooked rice. 
  • To reach the desired temperature, microwave for a few minutes. Make sure you don't overheat! 
  • Allow cooling if desired. Alternatively, wrap your homemade pad in a tote bag.

3. Using aromatic oils to massage: 

Massage therapy for 20 minutes can be beneficial. Massage treatment for menstruation entails the therapist pressing certain spots on your abdomen, side, and back while moving their hands over your body. Aromatherapy massage may offer added benefits of essential oils are used. 

Massage treatment and aromatherapy, according to Trusted Source, can help relieve period pain. The following are some essential oils that may be beneficial: 

  • lavender
  • peppermint
  • rose
  • fennel 

You can either buy or prepare your scented massage oil with identical ingredients. 

Always dilute your essential oil with a carrier oil before using it. Vegetable or nut oils, such as grapeseed or swiss chard, are examples.


4. Certain foods should be avoided: 

It's best to avoid meals that induce bloating and water retention during menstruation. The following are some of the worst offenders: 

  • foods high in fat 
  • carbonated beverages containing alcohol 
  • salty meals with caffeine 

Cramping and stress can be relieved by reducing or eliminating these foods. Instead, try relaxing (caffeine-free) ginger or mint teas or lemon-flavored hot water. Snack on fruits like strawberries or raspberries if you need a sugar fix.
