Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) is a disorder in which the thyroid gland produces insufficient amounts of specific hormones.
In the early stages of hypothyroidism, there may be no visible symptoms. Untreated hypothyroidism can lead to a variety of health issues over time, including obesity, joint discomfort, infertility, and heart disease.
To detect hypothyroidism, accurate thyroid function tests are available. Once you and your doctor have found the proper dose for you, synthetic thyroid hormone treatment is usually straightforward, safe, and effective.
Some common signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism are:
Causes
The equilibrium of chemical reactions in your body can be disturbed if your thyroid does not produce enough hormones. Autoimmune disease, hyperthyroidism therapies, radiation therapy, thyroid surgery, and certain drugs are all possible causes.
Your thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located right below your Adam's apple at the base of your neck. Triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), which are produced by the thyroid gland, have a huge impact on your health, affecting every part of your metabolism. These hormones also have an impact on how crucial functions like body temperature and heart rate are controlled.
Diagnosis
If you're feeling increasingly weary, have dry skin, constipation, or weight gain, or if you've had previous thyroid problems or a goitre, your doctor may recommend testing for an underactive thyroid.
Tests on the blood
Hypothyroidism is diagnosed based on your symptoms and the results of blood tests that detect TSH and, in some cases, thyroxine, the thyroid hormone. Thyroid underactivity is indicated by a low thyroxine level and a high TSH level. This is because your pituitary gland creates more TSH to encourage your thyroid gland to make more thyroid hormone. Thyroid diseases can now be diagnosed far earlier than in the past – frequently before symptoms appear.
Treatment
The synthetic thyroid hormone levothyroxine is used regularly as a standard treatment for hypothyroidism (Levo-T, Synthroid, others). This oral drug restores normal hormone levels, correcting hypothyroidism's signs and symptoms. Soon after you begin treatment, you should begin to feel better. The drug decreases cholesterol levels that have been raised by the condition over time and may help you lose weight. Treatment with levothyroxine will almost certainly be lifelong, although your doctor will likely check your TSH level once a year because the dosage you require may change.
It may take some time to find the right dosage.
Your doctor will usually evaluate your TSH level after six to eight weeks to establish the proper amount of levothyroxine. Six months later, blood levels are usually examined again. Excessive levels of the hormone can have negative consequences, including:
If you have severe hypothyroidism or coronary artery disease, your doctor may start you on a lower dose of medication and gradually raise it. The gradual restoration of hormones allows your heart to acclimate to the increased metabolic rate.
When taken at the right dose, levothyroxine has almost no adverse effects and is quite affordable. If you switch brands, make sure you tell your doctor so you get the proper dosage.
Also, if you're feeling better, don't skip doses or stop taking the medication. If you do, hypothyroidism symptoms will eventually return.
Levothyroxine absorption is optimal.
Certain drugs, supplements, and even foods may cause an allergic reaction.
If you consume a lot of soy products or follow a high-fiber diet, or if you take other drugs, such as:
Aluminum hydroxide, which is found in several antacids, can be found in iron supplements or multivitamins.
Calcium supplements are recommended.
It's recommended to take levothyroxine on an empty stomach at the same time every day. Take the hormone first thing in the morning, then wait an hour before eating or taking any other prescriptions. Wait four hours after your previous meal or snack before taking it before going to bed.
Take two pills the next day if you miss a dosage of levothyroxine.
Hypothyroidism in the subclinical stage
If you have subclinical hypothyroidism, talk to your doctor about treatment options. Thyroid hormone therapy is unlikely to help you if your TSH is only slightly elevated, and it may even be detrimental. Thyroid hormones, on the other hand, may increase your cholesterol level, heart pumping ability, and energy level if your TSH level is high.
