Why is your hair falling?

Hair loss is a very common trouble that affects both men and women; our new and ‘not’ necessarily improved lifestyles are largely to blame for this. While genes definitely play an integral role in the growth, development, texture, colour and fall of hair; there are also several other reasons including irregular eating habits, odd sleep patterns, lack of nutritious food that add to this pressing problem.

It is very important to look after hair, as along with our skin; hair and its related concerns like hair fall, are prime indicators of more serious health issues.

Hair fall when not treated at the right time can even cause mental strain, depression, psychological and self-esteem issues.

Hormonal imbalances, an under-active thyroid gland, nutritional deficiencies, fungal scalp infections like dandruff and insufficient blood circulation in the scalp include the other major factors that trigger hair loss in adults. Talk to a trusted doctor immediately if you notice sudden hair fall/loss and to rule out any major concerns.

Here are a few other causes of hair fall:
  • Extreme stress can lead to hair fall. Though the hair fall caused due to stress is not permanent, you can control it by meditating, doing yoga or other exercises.
  • Drinking alcohol, smoking and sun exposure are also reasons of hair loss.
  • Insufficient intake of nutrients; vitamins and minerals will lead to hair fall. So, consume a balanced diet rich with protein, vitamins and minerals and include spinach, lettuce and green leafy vegetables in your meals.-Biotin deficiency can cause hair fall and hair thinning. Include biotin rich foods like meat, seafood, soy beans, eggs, dairy products, and nuts, green vegetables like cabbage, kale, broccoli and cauliflower and fruits like avocado.
  • Certain medications used for treating infections or hormonal imbalances can trigger hair fall in some cases. Speak to your doctor immediately in case you notice extreme hair fall after taking a particular medication.
  •  Under-active thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) can cause hair thinning. Find out more on this by booking an appointment with our doctor
  • Your genetics are one of the prime reasons of baldness. More common in men, if it is in your genes, you can hardly do much to stop it. Even women can experience hair thinning or small bald patches.
  •  Excessive use of styling tools, chemical sprays and heat, to straighten or curl the hair, leads to hair breakage and gradual hair fall. Tying the hair very tight can also affect the hair roots causing hair fall. A hair oil massage with lukewarm oil (2-3 times a week) can be very effective to control hair loss.
  • Aging can also be a cause of hair thinning. However, it is not an obvious reason and you may not suffer from hair fall and balding.
  •  Pregnant women can experience heavy hair fall during or after a pregnancy due to changes in the hormonal levels in the body. The hair lost due to pregnancy usually comes back after delivery.
