Accept CookiesICSI or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is one more practiced method of assisted reproduction. As the name suggests, in this procedure a single male sperm is injected directly into the mature female egg (cytoplasm). One of the more effective methods of IVF; ICSI involves fertilizing eggs in the laboratory after they are extracted from the female.
One of the reasons this IVF (in vitro fertilisation) treatment is performed for the health seeker is when the cause has been identified as male infertility. Another reason for choosing ICSI can also be a previous failed IVF procedure.Though having said that, the plan to opt for ICSI is purely evaluated and decided on by the fertility specialist you consult. With advancements coming about in science and medicine, we need to believe that we will receive what is most evolved in terms of treatments as well.
In addition to being a path to successful fertilization, ICSI is also used by some couples who wish to test the embryo for genetic problems.
The process of preparing for any type of IVF procedure is physically and emotionally strenuous on the mother-to-be. It begins with the woman being stimulated with medications- blood tests, hormones, injections (sometimes daily), and regular monitoring. These steps are vital for the egg retrieval procedure, so the doctor can obtain sufficient eggs for the ICSI.
ICSI involves the use of micro-manipulation tools and microscopes that facilitate embryologists to find and pick up the individual sperm in a specially made ICSI needle. The needle then carefully goes through the outer shell of the egg and the sperm is injected into the inner portion of the egg, placed in a glass dish overnight in the lab. After the incubation period, the eggs that have been fertilized successfully are selected. Upto 4 of the fertilized eggs are then placed in the woman’s uterus using a catheter.
