Uterine fibroids – What are they and ways to reduce the risk of developing!

Uterine fibroids!  Sounds scary and disgusting? The good news, however, is that they're generally viewed as less of a problem than they sound like. They are non-cancerous muscular tumors that grow in the uterus. They may be the size of a pea or may grow as big as a grapefruit and in some cases even bigger. Many women live with uterine fibroids without knowing that they have it or not opting for treatment as they don’t feel that bad. No one knows for sure what causes these fibroids but researchers believe that they tend to run in families and are linked to hormones.

Do you feel sluggish and bloated? Do you have heavy periods accompanied by cramping? Do you feel an unusual pressure in your stomach area? Do you feel a need to urinate quite often? Do you notice a slight bulge in your stomach? Do any of these symptoms sound like what's happening to you? If yes, it could be the sign that you have developed fibroids. If your abdomen feels and looks weirdly stuffed and you are not expecting you need to see your doctor right away!

As the cause of fibroids is still unknown, there are no clear guidelines to avoid them. However, there are some things you can do to reduce the risk of developing fibroids.
  1. Exercise regularly: Studies have validated that exercises have a protective effect on hormone-mediated fibroids. Hence, women who exercise regularly are less likely to develop symptomatic fibroids.
  2. Maintain an ideal weight: Research indicates that uterine fibroids are common in obese women. So it is wise to maintain an ideal weight. This will minimize estrogen levels in your body.
  3. Change your diet: Studies suggest that consumption of red meat increases your risk of uterine fibroids. Cut back on red meat. Include more of leafy green veggies and fruits in your diet.
  4. Get sufficient vitamin D: A new study says that women with adequate levels of Vitamin D are less likely to develop uterine fibroids. Dare to venture outdoors to get some healthy sun exposure!
  5. Reduce estrogen exposure: Avoid oral contraceptives and estrogen therapy. The foods you eat regularly contain chemicals and pesticides which destroy your hormonal balance. So eat organically raised products.
In spite of these protective measures, if you think you have fibroids, you should make an appointment with S10 SafeCare standard gynecology clinics. They may perform a pelvic exam and order an ultrasound. If fibroids are diagnosed they will discuss the treatment options with you and help you to make a choice about the best treatment for you.
