Psoriasis: What you should know

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease known to commonly affect different parts of the skin. It is characterised by the appearance of red, scaly and itchy patches on the skin, at the elbows, knees, and scalp. The patches tend to vary in severity, in the sense they could be small and focused on a particular area or they could completely cover the body.Psoriasis not only affects a person’s physical appearance but also takes a toll on them mentally and psychologically owing to their looks.

The occurrence of these long-lastingpatches of abnormal skinis quite a mystery and researchers around the world are working tirelessly to determine its exact causes. Some factors that suggest its occurrence includea combination of elements such as genetics and environmental factors- though these too aren’t definite. Immune regulation defects are seen as one of the major players and it is common for psoriasis to be in members of the same family, but psoriasis is not contagious. There are some people who have very mild psoriasis and they may not even know that they have the disease while several patients have very severe psoriasis that affects the surface of their entire body.

People have reported an aggravation of psoriasis and their symptoms in the colder winter months. Psychological stress and infections can also add to this. Psoriasis affects all races so even warm temperatures aren’t really a deterrent. The pattern of this long-term skin conditionpsoriasis has a variable course, intermittently improving and worsening. There are cases where psoriasis clears up for years and also there are also times where it very gradually diminishes in appearance.

Even though psoriasis is seen in across different age groups from babies to senior citizens, most patients are first diagnosed in their early adult years.
