Accept CookiesStasis dermatitis is a skin condition that develops in people due to fluid build-up caused by poor blood circulation. This typically occurs in the lower legs because that’s where blood collects. Noticeably, people over the age of 50 years are at a higher risk for developing stasis dermatitis and more so if they have any kind of heart disease, or are very overweight, or have occupations that require them to sit for long periods of time. The cause of this condition is also venous insufficiency; and it occurs when your veins have some difficulty sending blood from your legs to your heart.
The symptoms include discolouration of the skin on ankles or shins, itching, and thickened skin.If unchecked for too long, stasis dermatitis can progress into ulcers.
One way to avoid stasis dermatitis is to prevent any kind of swelling in your lower legs, or peripheral edema, is the best way to avoid getting.
How it occurs:
The pressure on the veins increases when blood collects in the veins of your lower legs. The increased pressure damages your capillaries (very small blood vessels), allowing proteins to leak into your tissues. This leakage then leads to an accumulation of fluid, blood cells, and proteins, which causes your legs to swell. This swelling is called peripheral edema.
Women are more likely to get stasis dermatitis than men and those who suffer from high blood pressure have a greater risk. A protein called fibrinogen is what is responsible for the changes you see in your skin and patients with stasis dermatitis will usually experience swollen legs and feet, open sores, or itchy and reddish skin.
Your doctor will usually advise you to wear compression stockings and he will list some prescription creams to apply on the affected area. Talk to the experts in the S10 Health SafeCare Network to make an appointment and find out how you can help your condition.
