The only method to protect oneself from the highly contagious COVID-19 is to get vaccinated. In India, the COVID-19 vaccine campaign is in full swing, with more than 117 crore doses administered thus far. And now, the much-discussed Sputnik Light Covid-19 vaccine from Russia is slated to hit the market in December 2021.
Sputnik Light, the second Russian vaccine to get approval, has been approved by the Drugs Controller General of India (DGCI). The first, Sputnik V, a two-dose vaccination, was approved in May. The first two immunizations given to citizens in the country were Covishield and Covaxin. The Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech, respectively, manufacture both indigenous vaccines.

What makes Sputnik Light special?
Until now, all COVID-19 immunizations (excluding J&J's single dosage vaccine) have been provided in two doses around the world. Sputnik Light, a single-dose vaccination, is now expected to arrive in India next month. The dose, however, is less effective against the South African variety of COVID-19, although it does provide some protection against other types, according to the developers. The markers promise that they will soon cover all of the mutations that exist. The availability of Sputnik Light is thought to have the potential to accelerate the immunization push in nations such as India. The vaccine can also be administered as a booster shot to maintain existing herd immunity, according to the developers.
Sputnik Light's Efficacy:
Sputnik Light is a single-dose vaccine that, according to a clinical trial, is highly effective and acts in the same way as the other two vaccine doses. In clinical testing, the vaccine showed a 79.4 percent efficacy, according to the developers of Sputnik Light. The corporation has yet to share formal statistics on the subject, and the duration of the acquired immunity is unknown. The Russian Ministry of Health, the Gamaleya National Research Centre of Epidemiology and Microbiology, and the RDIF collaborated to develop the vaccine.
It is the initial component of the Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine (recombinant human adenovirus serotype number 26 (rAd26)). Sputnik V, the first Russian vaccine, is touted to have a 91% effectiveness rate.
Sputnik Light's price is yet to be approved in India. It is expected to cost roughly $10, according to reports (approx Rs 730).
Sputnik V, which was released in May, was the second most expensive vaccination at the time. It costs Rs 948 per dose, which increases to Rs 995.40 once five percent GST is added.
How do Sputnik V and Sputnik lite work?
Sputnik V builds the spike protein in the cells and stores the information in the double-stranded DNA with the two doses. It's made from adenoviruses, which are viruses that cause colds. Sputnik V was inspired by the adenovirus that was utilized to develop a vaccine for Ebola by Johnson & Johnson.
The vaccination is made in such a way that the adenovirus is unable to multiply. However, the gene for the spike protein can readily be read by the cell and copied into a molecule known as messenger RNA, or mRNA. Spike proteins are assembled and broken into pieces by the chemicals in the cell. Simultaneously, the adenovirus causes the immune system to react to the spike proteins, resulting in the development of T-cell antibodies.
Similarly, Sputnik Light uses recombinant adenovirus to carry the code.
A clinical trial was conducted:
In September, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) granted approval for phase 3 bridging trials in India for the single-dose COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik Light.
The trials were carried out in collaboration with Dr. Reddy's Laboratories in Hyderabad. The Subject Expert Committee (SEC) gave approval for the trials to be conducted in the country after the company submitted data on safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy.
In May, the vaccination was approved in Russia for those over the age of 60. It has also received permission in over 15 countries and is currently undergoing registration in another 30.
